Abstract:
Fish show the greatest plasticity of sex determination (SD) mechanisms amongst vertebrates ranging from environmental SD to highly complex forms of genetic SD. In the case of genetic SD this is linked to a similarly high variability of sex chromosome differentiation. To explain this variety in an evolutionary, ecological and developmental biological context major paradigms and hypothesis have been phrased. A comparative view on SD in several species across the fish tree of life will be presented as a baseline for discussions on hypotheses that explain the evolution of sex chromosomes and how new SD mechanisms arise again and again.
